Daddy Yankee - The Big Boss of Reggaetón
Feb 17th 1977, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Just when Latin America was just on the rise as a political power, A young boy was born. His name was Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez. He had been an athletic person during his childhood and had been dreaming to be a professional baseball player. His dreams unfortunately had to bite the dust after he was shot by a stray round of AK47s. He spent a year and a half recovering from the wound. Just then suddenly, Another door opened in his life and that was music.
Ramon took the stage name Daddy Yankee and got into the reggaetón field which was at the time coming from the underground as started by DJ Playero. He was just 18 when he got married to his high school girlfriend. He started his first ever record company called El Cartel records. One of his singles Gasolina from Barrio Fino was a massive breakthrough for both Daddy Yankee and Reggaetón. This changed him into a megastar and he also gave many hits. He also acted in Talento De Barrio.
DY had not only just made hits as a singer but also helped bring in talents through his record company. His collaboration with Luis Fonsi for Despacito was indeed a trending song which became the first dual voiced song to hit the Billboard Latin Songs Lists after 20 years. Despacito also witnessed another version by Canada's Teen Idol Justin Bieber. That song also was used for political purpose by Venezuelan Dictator Nicolas Maduro which angered DY the most. He also never shied from collaborating with Snoop Dogg for Gangsta Zone. He was also well known for his humanitarian efforts because he helped many people who were suffering from the aftereffects of Hurricane Maria. Despite having achieved success, he still remains humble even to this day
DY had given music fans a heart attack when he announced that he was retiring because he felt he had completed his goal of making reggaetón a musical phenomenon. His last ever album was Legenddaddy which was followed by 2 farewell tours; La Ultima Vuelta and La Meta.
So Long DY. You have entertained us for many more. We Love You.
